Omer Astrachan

Omer Backley-Astrachan was born in Israel in 1987. Omer is a Sydney based dancer and choreographer.In 2009 Omer joined ‘Kamea Dance Company’, performing in works by choreographers Tamir Ginz, Uri Ivgi & Johan Greben, Lior Lev and Eyal Nahum. In 2011 Omer joined ‘Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company 2’ and performed in the crea ons of Ar s c Director Rami Be’er.

In 2012 Omer moved to Tel-Aviv where he worked and collaborated with various choreographers such as Rotem Tashach, Maya Levi, Sally-Anne Friedland and more. In 2013 Omer worked with ‘Jerusalem Dance Theater’ performing in works by choreographer Lior Lev. In the same year Omer joined ‘Idan Cohen Dance Company’ performing in a number of company works, as well as two solo pieces with which he toured to Singapore, USA, Brazil and South Korea.

In late 2014 Omer has moved with his wife Sharon Backley-Astrachan to Sydney Australia. In Australia Omer worked with choreographers such as: Dean Walsh, Kay Armstrong, Jay Bailey, Joshua Thomson and more. In 2015 Omer performed in a work by the renowned Performance Ar st Marina Abramovic in ‘Project 30’ curated by ‘Kaldor Arts Projects’.

Omer was the recipient of ‘BrandX Crea ve Development Residency’ in 2015 for the work TOHU in partnership with his wife Sharon, and of ‘Bundanon Trust Residency’ in 2016 also for the work TOHU. Omer’s choreography was performed in many events and theaters in Sydney such as: Sydney Fringe Fes val, On The Cusp, Happy Hour- Readymade Space and more. In 2016 Omer created the work ‘Land-Escape’ for Ausdance NSW‘s ‘Waste Not’ community project in Penrith NSW. Omer choreographed works on the students of: NAISDA- Na onal Aboriginal and Islander Skills Development Associa on, Ev & Bow Full Time Dance Centre, Lane Cove Dance Academy and more.
