KRISTINA CHAN
Kristina is a dancer and choreographer based on the Mid North Coast NSW Australia. Through choreography and dance Kristina makes performance work that explores notions of impermanence, fragility and mortality in nature, humanity and our environment. Collaborating with artists in sound, light and visual design to create an environment for the dance to occur within, Kristina’s work is palpable and visceral.
Kristina was commissioned by Sydney Dance Company (SDC) to make a work for New Breed season 2015. Her work Conform for eight male dancers premiered in Ludwigshafen Germany and Carriageworks Sydney. In 2016 she made Pacific for SDC Pre-Professional Year. Kristina has collaborated with film maker Neil Mansfield making a dance and video installation Grave for the Lockup Gallery Newcastle through a residency at Catapult Choreographic Hub. In 2017 Kristina made a commissioned piece for Expressions Dance Company and Opera Queensland for Mozart Airborne. In 2018, Kristina was commissioned by Hong Kong’s leading dance company City Contemporary Dance Company to make Summer premiering in Hong Kong followed by an Australian tour of Brisbane QPAC and Darwin Entertainment Centre. In 2019 she was commissioned by Dance North to choreograph for Communal Table premiering at Brisbane Festival, and a commission by Newcastle Art Gallery + Catapult Dance Crawling Through Mud for Japanese ceramics exhibit SODEISHA.
Kristina has over 21 years of performance experience performing throughout Australia, Canada, UK, USA, Asia, Israel and Europe working with companies, independent choreographers and collaborators; Kate Champion’s Force Majeure, Garry Stewart’s Australian Dance Theatre, Gideon Obarzanek’s Chunky Move, Australian Ballet, Lucy Guerin Inc, Stephanie Lake, Lisa Wilson, Sydney Theatre Company, Legs On The Wall, Narelle Benjamin, Anton, Tanja Liedtke, Craig Bary, Victoria Chiu, Martin del Amo and Victoria Hunt.
Kristina has been awarded a Helpmann Award for her performance in Narelle Benjamin’s In Glass (2011) and two Australian Dance Awards for Tanja Liedtke’s Twelfth Floor (2006) and construct (2009).
