Impact Curates: Dance on Film brings together two of the most eminent voices in Australian dance on film, Sue Healey and The Samaya Wives. Join them for an engaging in-conversation event as they share insights into their creative practices, the unique possibilities of choreography for the screen, and the evolving landscape of dance on film. Discover the inspiration behind their work, their artistic processes, and the power of film as a medium for dance.

SUE HEALEY

Sue Healey is one of Australia’s leading interdisciplinary dance artists, working across live performance, screen and installation. Over four decades she has built a body of work that spans theatre stages, galleries and international film festivals, creating more than 55 works presented across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, Asia, Europe and North America.

Healey develops large-scale live works, dance films and international collaborations through a curated, project-based ensemble model. Recent works include AFTERWORLD (Sydney Festival 2025), ON VIEW: ICONS (Sydney Festival 2024), and MORE-THAN-HUMAN, a performance installation work currently in development.

Healey is widely recognised as a pioneer of dance on screen in Australia. She has won six Australian Dance Awards, two Hong Kong Dance Awards, and received the Australia Council Award for Dance in 2021. Her film EILEEN won the Opus Klassik in Berlin (Best Music Video) in 2023 and was a finalist at Cannes Dance Film Festival in France and Dance on Camera New York.

THE SAMAYA WIVES

The Samaya Wives come together in life and creation as a multi-disciplinary duo to explore the many colours and tones of what it means to be alive on this earth and reveal the innate one-ness that ultimately links us all. To bring a voice to the voiceless, to shed light in dark spaces, to empower and to inspire; The Samaya Wives strive towards equality, wisdom, compassion and authentic connection. The fusion of their respective expertise in Dance, Photography and Film enables them to communicate through external imagery the internal world of the human psyche. Using their passion for creating bold, eye catching imagery, they set out to use art as a spot light on global humanitarian issues, encouraging viewers to expand their hearts and with it their world view and preconceptions.

Recent appreciations include two time winner of the international 60 second dance film competition ( Finland and Denmark), winner of best film in the FAD film festival (USA), Portland Dance Film Festival (USA) & Berlin Motion Picture festival, Two time winner Australian Dance Award for Excellence in Dance on Film 2018/2020, winner of most wonderful film at the IPFF 2020, . The Samaya Wives have also presented a live performance work with film at the Komische Oper in Berlin, produced by the Staats Ballett Berlin.
