Jesse delves into the stories behind the artworks as inspiration for his physical research, finding influence within his own movement vocabulary. Looking for variation in his physicality while referencing the exhibition is challenging but inspirational.
This incredible residency provides Jesse with two mentors: Daniel Riley & Craig Bary
Daniel Riley (mentor) a Wiradjuri man from New South Wales, AUS, has an extensive, and critically acclaimed, career as a dancer (Leigh Warren & Dancers, Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, New Movement Collective, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Chunky Move), and choreographer (QL2 Dance, QUT, Third Row Dance Company, Louisville Ballet, VCA, Sydney Dance Company, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Dancenorth). He has held the positions of Associate Producer (2019-2020) and Creative Associate (2020-2021) at ILBIJERRI Theatre Company. Daniel is a Lecturer in Contemporary Dance at the Victorian College of the Arts where he directs the Kummarge First Nations Mentorship Program. He works as an Independent Artist and sits on the Board of Chunky Move.
Void: Newcastle Art Gallery
Void brings together contemporary Aboriginal artistic practice from across the country. Curated by Emily McDaniel, the exhibition features existing works across the mediums of drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, video and photography by artists including Pepai Jangala Carroll, Jonathan Jones, Mabel Juli, John Mawurndjul AM, Hayley Millar-Baker, Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri, Mr R Peters, Doreen Reid Nakamarra, Andy Snelgar, Dr. Thancoupie Gloria Fletcher AO, Freddie Timms, James Tylor, Jennifer Wurrkidj, and Josephine Wurrkidj.
